Why do you do mathematics? What was your first encounter with mathematics, your first mathematical 'shock wave'? What experiences and people were especially influential on your mathematical education? Your name is linked to the field of wavelet theory. Here at Cirm we founded the Chaire Jean-Morlet. What does it mean for you to be here in the place where wavelet theory finds some of its origins? Which of your mathematical results are you most fond of? Could you describe your first 'Eurêka moment', or the most important? You were the first female president of the International Mathematical Union. A consecration for a woman in a men's world? Do you feel that your career is and has been marked by the fact you are a woman? Were there some difficulties or obstacles? What were the main challenges? What advice would you give young people coming into mathematics today? How do you feel about being here at Cirm? What is the importance of this instrument for mathematicians?

Kenan, Jr. Professor in the mathematics and applied mathematics departments at Princeton University. She taught at Princeton for 16 years. In January 2011 she moved to Duke University as a professor in mathematics. She was the first woman to be president of the International Mathematical Union (2011–2014). She is best known for her work with wavelets in image compression.

Why she does mathematics, first mathematical memories, first encounter with mathematics, influences, research themes, wavelets theory, collaboration with Alex Grossman and Jean Morlet, first « Eurêka moment », etc.
